Frequently asked questions

The answers are pre-written texts we wrote ourselves, not a chatbot and not generated answers. This site has no chatbot. For common questions the search shows an answer card; for anything else, write to kontakt@saltwarden.com.

The project

What is Saltwarden Online?

Saltwarden Online is an independent 2D online role-playing game, inspired by classic MMORPGs. It runs in the browser and on handhelds, supports controllers and suits short sessions. World, story, names, numbers, texts and art are our own. It is a solo project in development, with no pay-to-win.

When can I play?

Not yet. The game runs internally. A first, small test with invited players comes at the earliest with the first playable version. We do not give a date. If you want to hear from us, join the waitlist; we only write when there is something to test.

Which language do the game and the site use?

Game texts are English only at first. German as a second game language is planned but not decided. This website exists in German and English, and care and support in the alpha run in German and English.

How often does the devlog appear?

The devlog appears when there is something to report, not on a fixed schedule. It tells the real course of the project, setbacks included, in our own voice. Where the project stands right now is shown on the home page under "Status".

Why Saltwarden instead of Rivenward?

Rivenward was a working title. Before the first public appearance, a check showed that it collided with a registered trademark. Since 8 October 2026 the project is called Saltwarden Online. The old address rivenwardonline.com redirects to saltwarden.com.

Will the game come to Steam?

That is not decided and we promise nothing about it. There is no Steam page and no wishlist. If you want to know how it goes on, join the waitlist. On the Steam Deck the browser runs with a controller, like on other handhelds.

Can I join the team?

No, it is a solo project; we are not hiring and do not take contributions to game code or art. Feedback is welcome: in the forum, on Discord, as corrections in the wiki, and in the alpha with bug reports and the survey.

Alpha and waitlist

How do I get into the alpha?

The alpha is closed and free. We invite people personally, only from the waitlist with a confirmed address, aged 16 or older, in small waves. A donation or an early sign-up gives no priority. The invitation arrives by mail, then you read and confirm the alpha agreement.

Read more → · As of: October 2026

How does the waitlist work?

You enter your address and confirm it by mail (double opt-in). After that we only write when a test is coming up or the project ends. No newsletter, no sharing. You can unsubscribe through the link in every mail. The address sits in our own database, together with the place on the site where you signed up.

How do I report a bug?

In the alpha, use "Report a bug" (/alpha/bug) with the steps to reproduce, realm and time. Otherwise post in the forum section "Bugs" with steps, browser and time, or write to [email protected]. Please report bugs instead of exploiting them.

What does the alpha agreement say?

The alpha is an unfinished, free test for ages 16 and up. Saves can be lost, including through wipes. What you see is confidential until we release it, including streams and images. You can stop and revoke your consent at any time. The German version is binding.

Price and support

What does the game cost?

The plan is a one-time purchase, no subscription. No pay-to-win: nothing you can buy makes a character stronger. Races, classes and zones are never sold one by one. Prices are not set, and there is no date for sales. The alpha is free.

Read more → · As of: October 2026

Can I support the project?

Yes, voluntarily, once or monthly, paid through Stripe. The money goes into servers, domain and hours. You get a thank-you mail and, if you want, your name on the list, nothing else: no advantage in the game, no earlier alpha place, no pre-purchase. No donation receipt.

Read more → · As of: October 2026

Can I get a donation back?

If you donated by mistake or picked the wrong amount, write to us within 30 days and we refund the donation in full. You can cancel a monthly donation at any time in your account or through the link in the Stripe receipt. Deleting your account does not end it by itself.

Technology and devices

Where can I play, and what do I need?

You play in the desktop browser, with mouse and keyboard or a controller; the page can also be saved as a web app. We have no fixed system requirements yet, we measure them in the alpha. Consoles and touch controls are not part of the first version. A PC or Linux application is not decided.

Controller, handheld and Android

Every function can be used with a controller, from the start. Handhelds and Android run as a web app and in the first version only with a controller. Touch controls for phones are not part of the first version and not scheduled. There is no finished Android app.

Data, AI and chatbot

How do I delete my account?

In your account settings. You have 14 days to undo the deletion; after that your account, profile and characters are deleted. Forum posts stay, anonymized; on request we delete them entirely. By law we must keep payment records for 7 years, without any link to your account.

Read more → · As of: October 2026

Can I download my data?

Yes. In your account under "My data" you download your account data yourself as a JSON file, once per hour, without password hash and access tokens. For anything else, such as access or correction requests, write to [email protected].

What happens to my data?

The site sets only technically necessary cookies, has no tracking and loads nothing from third-party servers. Visiting stores no IP address and we count without cookies; for account and game we store it for a limited time (sections 6 and 15). Servers are in Austria, relayed by Cloudflare. Accounts, waitlist and alpha are open from age 16 only.

Is there AI in the game or on the site?

Not in the images: all pixel art is made by code and by hand, with no image models. AI tools help with programming; a person makes the decisions and the code runs through tests. In the game no language model controls characters or other players. If we ever use AI for texts, we label it openly.

Is there a chatbot?

This site has no chatbot. The answers are pre-written texts we wrote ourselves, not generated answers. For common questions the search shows an answer card, otherwise the results. For open questions, write to [email protected].

The game

What is One Life?

One Life is a realm of its own with its own characters. If a character dies, it is gone; death is final unless a provable server error caused it. A one-time transfer of the fallen character to Haven is planned. It is the only place where loss counts. The exact rules are set before the first playable version.

Read more → · As of: October 2026

Which realms are there: Haven and Warfront?

There are two realms at the start: Haven (PvE) and One Life. On Haven there are duels by choice, but no world combat. Warfront, the PvP realm, comes only after the first version, together with the second faction. We have no date for it.

Read more → · As of: October 2026

Which classes are there?

In the first test you play Warrior, Priest or Mage, level 1 to 15, with talents. The full game is meant to have nine classes with three talent trees each; further classes come in later stages, there are no dates. The "Classes" page shows the current state.

Read more → · As of: October 2026

Which peoples and factions are there?

In the first test you play for The Concordat as a human or as a court elf, the Ithreni. The Ithreni are Priest or Mage there. The Free Banners and further peoples are meant for the full game, not for the first test, and have no date.

The world

What does Warden mean?

Warden is the player's role: the first generation after the war is sent to the borderland as Wardens. The player is never a chosen one or a hero; it is about work, people and places, not the fate of the world. More is in the wiki.

What are Tide and Ebb?

The Tide is the current of life, magic and memory. The Ebb is what recedes: death and forgetting. The Tidewall is the threshold between the two, and it is broken. The wiki pages Tide, Ebb and Tidewall say more, without giving the story away.

Community and contact

Is there a Discord?

Yes. Dates, access and feedback run through the Discord server; the team assigns the tester role by hand. The website loads nothing from Discord; data flows only once you follow the link. The forum on this site is also open to everyone with an account.

Read more → · As of: October 2026

How do I reach you?

By mail at [email protected]. We reply as fast as development allows; we cannot promise a deadline. The search or the forum often helps first. Who runs the project is stated in the imprint.

Read more → · As of: October 2026

What are the forum rules?

Stay friendly; criticism of ideas is welcome, attacks on people are not. No names, texts or images from other games, no AI images as suggestions. Report rather than argue, through "Report" under each post. Please give steps to reproduce bugs.
