Paths and maps

Harald2 min read

From Whitmere through Lanterhall into the vale: the built zones have connected paths. The minimap, zone map and waypoints help with navigation; long-distance travel belongs to the plans.

The open zone map of Whitmere with paths, terrain and a legend including an exit symbol.

The built route begins in Whitmere. Its southern exit leads to Lanterhall; the capital connects the starting zone with Lanterford Vale through its western and eastern gates. The entrance to Slackwater Mine lies in the north of the vale, with the mine set up as an instance for each group. This connection describes the existing game build, without announcing additional zones.

The minimap and large map draw paths, water, terrain and buildings in the current zone. M opens the large map; on a controller, use Select. Exits have directional chevrons pointing towards the neighbouring zone; landmarks and inns have their own symbols. The legend explains exits, landmarks, inns and fog. The large map shows the current zone. This does not yet make the whole world a playable travel map.

With the map open, the D-pad moves the cursor and snaps to locations. Hold LT to move it freely, or use the left stick for continuous movement. A places or removes a waypoint, LB/RB change zoom, and B or Select close the map. A waypoint can appear at the edge with direction and distance. It helps with navigation; it does not transport your character.

Unexplored terrain is dimmed, with main paths, bridges, hubs and exits faintly visible through it. Lanterhall and instances have no fog. The existing fog mask is saved locally for each character and zone; server-side storage is not yet part of this build.

Visible long-distance journeys across the world map in real time are an approved planning direction. They are not an already playable route here. Minimaps, zone transitions and waypoints do not imply a new destination or a date for additional zones or means of transport.

The map display and these zone connections are built. Selection of suitable delivered images and visual sign-off are still pending. Road checks also do not amount to a blanket promise that every path is safe or every map finding is resolved. This post remains an unpublished draft for Harald's editorial review.
